“The Library Series”

I was very interested in the compositional work of Pauline Oliveros, so when I learned she was coming to Vancouver, I volunteered to assist with any music technology or integrated media needs she might have. The Western Front was producing the concert, so all of the technical aspects were well taken care of.  However, Pauline and Ione did want to make a recording of some material from “The Library Series” that was to be played in an art gallery in San Francisco.

I recorded, “The Library of Maps”, “The Library of Threads” and “The Library of Stones” with Ione expressively performing the text and Pauline improvising music with Ken Newby, Vancouver musician.

During the time the duo was in Vancouver, I attended a workshop at the Western Front that introduced me to some of Ione’s work on recognizing and using your dreams. I also went to a lecture at Emily Carr where Pauline played some recordings she had made and talked about her music. All of this activity was very inspirational to me and the acceptace of my work by internationally known artists gave me renewed confidence in my abilities.

May 2005

In May 2005, I volunteered to be a stage manager at the “New Interfaces for Musical Expression Conference” held at the University of British Columbia.  This was a challenging task, as I had to coordinate a team to set-up and take down many different performers who were all operating computers or instruments that were unusual and often fragile pieces of electronic gear.

One particularly challenging set-up included an improvised internet performance by Pauline Oliveros, who was playing from New York with a musician and dancer on stage  at UBC and another musician in Italy. I was in charge of setting up and maintaining the internet connections and video taping the dancer and musician on stage. This was my first contact with Pauline Oliveros and her music.
