I am really excited by the work of the Loco Moto Art Collective!
I first met them through Jamie Griffith, an artist who attended the same workshop at STEIM
In July, I volunteered to help out at their show at Queen Elizabeth Park, “Youth, Technology and Nature”.
I was impressed by all the work shown, particularly by Merlyn Chipman’s work using video feedback.
I will post some of my own photos of the event soon.
Merlyn will be doing a workshop, “Weaving with Light” at Aberthau where he will show you how to print these patterns on cloth.
- 6:00pm until 9:00pm
Sounds like a lot of FUN!
Laurie Anderson’s new show is a network performance with Ai Wei Wei. Video from the premiere at the Luminato Festival in Toronto.
They are using Skype to connect the live Toronto performers with Ai Wei Wei in Beijing.
Network performance is a growing area and Play the Moment is on the leading edge!
I was inspired to start working with network performance by Pauline Oliveros and Chris Chafe. Chris Chafe calls these Telematic performances and has developed a software at CCRMA Lab, Stanford, that works really well. For the techies who read this blog — using Red Hat Linux OS — a communications port can be opened.
In 2010, I visited San Francisco to learn this software, and I was able to open ports on two computers and communicate using the software. This system works really well, but both sides of the performance must have the ability to operate sophisticated technology. That is why my efforts to successfully produce a network performance were not realized until I started using Waterwheel in 2012. My first solo show, Flow Time, led to the development of work for the group, Play the Moment.
It was my vision to have a combined live and networked performance that was realized with the recent Mini Maker Faire show. This was the first time one of the group members was live, playing with the networked stage on a projected screen. Now, I am seeking more of these performance opportunities so internet viewers can join concert goers to enjoy live, improvised media performances.
Now network performance is going mainstream with this show by Laurie Anderson — as mainstream as experimental performance art ever gets — but soon, I believe this will become a widely recognized genre of performance.

It is very exciting for me to be counting down the days until I leave for Amsterdam. I have to get ready for the wireless sensor workshop by purchasing some Arduino parts!
This is my first trip to Europe, so I am very excited and a bit nervous.
June — Amsterdam
Early July — Germany
July 11th — Mons, Belgium for my friend and collaborator Sonia’s show!
No return date set as I have applied for a few events and residencies in Europe that still might come through to extend my stay.
Any helpful tips, please contact me!

It always causes a pang of sadness and anger that women are still fighting the same battles that I thought we had won already.
Why are women still being forced to fight for control of our own bodies, reproductive rights, equal pay for equivalent work and other gender related issues.
In my opinion, these rights are so obvious, there should be no room for argument.
Now I am writing for a feminist blog based in NYC, you can read my first post here.
I wrote about the Femen protests as the political protest actions of young women, including Pussy Riot, have started to gain media attention.
I plan to write regularly in support of gender related issues.
International Womens’ Day inspired me to write a song.
Play the Moment will be performing as part of the Vancouver Maker Faire June 1-2 at the PNE.
This is a rare opportunity to experience a network music performance with a live band member in attendance.
I will be playing computer and singing on-site and I will be available to answer questions about our show and my other projects.
In addition to the confirmed Play the Moment performance, I am working on also presenting Angels Among Us, an interactive installation featuring my collaboration with visual artist Joanna Gabler as Zest Continuum.
More information on exact dates and times will be announced soon.
This is your invitation to the 121212 Festival of Cyber-performance!
The retrospective section of the program “Walking Backwards into the Future” is already underway.
The portion that I am involved in is the new experimental works, Testing 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 . Play the Moment – Shakti meets for a networked internet performance on the Waterwheel Tap.
I am working with Play the Moment – Shakti, a group of four women located in different cities. This pioneering effort in experimental media arts includes Victoria Gibson (Vancouver, Canada), Jude Abrams (Toronto) and Sonia Paço-Rocchia (Montreal) creating music with Christina deRoos (Detroit, USA) manipulating the visuals.
We will be performing a piece called ‘excavating desire/fouilles pour le désire‘
About the Show
Excavating Desire – Fouilles pour le Désire
Play The Moment Shakti (Canada, USA)
Excavating Desire is a free improvised audio and visual work in four movements:
- On the Surface – exploring constraints imposed on female desire by society and ourselves
- Digging Deep – recognizing our wants and needs
- Gathering Courage – risking societal censure, economic loss or emotional pain requires resolve and strength
- Flowering of Passion – acceptance and expression of our own inner identity
Four women going through the same risk and hardship of “Excavating Desire”.
Desires are often hidden underneath layers so we do not even recognize them ourselves. It is a risk to reveal our true self, particularly in personal and intimate situations, but also when revealing oneself as an artist. “Excavating Desire” provides a structure to peel away the layers of constraint and grant ourselves permission to express what we choose to see and hear as art.
